Summer Skin Safety Tips for Babies

The founder of California Baby shares her expert advice on how to protect your little one during the hot and sunny days of summer.

These six tips will help keep your baby safe this summer.

1. Introduce baby to sun exposure gradually to build up tolerance.

2. Some medications, like antibiotics, make the skin extra sensitive causing it to burn more easily than normal. Read the warning labels and consult your doctor when using an OTC or prescription drug.

3. Fight dehydration by making sure your little one drinks plenty of water; one quart every two hours is a good rule of thumb.

4. A hat with an extra-tight weave (look for SPF30 fabric) is the best protection for baby’s scalp.

5. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends keeping babies 6 months and younger completely out of the sun. If this is not impossible, they recommend a mineral-based sunscreen. A no-fragrance sunscreen is the best choice for very young babies.

6. When using a bug spray, don’t forget to give shoes and hair a spritz for head-to-toe protection.
