Zero appetite

Melissa 12/21/2009

Question:
I'm in my first trimester and I feel full all the time. I don't feel like eating anything, but I know I should, right?

Answer:

Dr. Adina H. Keller responds:
Everyone knows that it’s important to have a balanced and healthy diet when you are pregnant. Unfortunately, the first trimester can be challenging as hormones rage, causing many food aversions and sometimes causing a decrease in appetite. Don't be alarmed, though, because your developing baby will take nutrients that you have stored already and will not suffer from your lack of appetite. It is important to stay hydrated, though, so make sure you are taking sips of water throughout the day and eat small meals that you find appealing.

I’m not recommending a diet of potato chips and crackers, but don't feel bad if you’re craving salty foods; you can allow yourself a less than perfect diet for now. When you start to feel better in the second trimester, get yourself back on track by eating more fruits and vegetables.
