Question:

 

I am about nine weeks pregnant and I have a bad cold and a sore throat. Is it safe for me to take over the counter medications, such as Dayquil, Advil or Pepto Bismol?

The best remedies for colds, sore throat and allergies are the ones with the shortest ingredient list. With lots of warm water, chicken soups and Vitamin C supplements as your baseline tools, use over-the-counter medicines sparingly.

 

Advil is never used in pregnancy, because as a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, it can allow for excessive bleeding. Advil is also known generically as Ibuprofen and is sold under brand names such as Motrin and Aleve. 

 

Dayquil and  Pepto Bismol are classified as “Class C” drugs, which means basically that your doctor makes the decision if they’re safe for you, because they haven’t been rigorously tested in clinical trials.
