Excessive Saliva

GLodean  03/30/2010

Question:
I’m 14 weeks pregnant, and I have been experiencing excessive saliva for two months now. Is it normal to have clear mucus in my throat, too? The mucus is so bad that it makes me gag and I feel like I’m choking all the time. I hope you can help me with this. Thank you!

RN Aubrey Wade responds:
This discomfort of pregnancy might be the most inconvenient, especially when you’re out in public! Thankfully, it often subsides or resolves by the middle of the second trimester. If it’s enough of a problem to actually cause gagging, ask your doctor or midwife to prescribe a medication that will decrease the secretions.
