Question:
Can I do anything about morning sickness? I have it all day, and sometimes it gets so bad that I can't seem to concentrate on anything else. Is there something I can take to make it better?
Answer:
Dr. Adina H. Keller responds:Morning sickness is very common, affecting 70 to 85 percent of all pregnancies. Studies show that taking a multivitamin starting at the time of conception can decrease morning sickness. Try eating 5 to 6 small meals daily instead of 3 large meals. Avoid fatty and spicy foods and stay hydrated. Ginger supplements and motion sickness bands can be helpful. Taking extra vitamin B6 has been shown to be effective in managing nausea. Call your doctor to discuss dosage.
If the vomiting is concerning or you are losing weight or unable to tolerate liquids, you should call your doctor immediately. You may require prescription strength anti-nausea medication. The good news is that this usually resolves by 12 to 13 weeks.
