Supplementing with Formula

Tabitha 03/11/2011

Question:

My daughter is almost 7 weeks old. She was 7 pounds, 12 ounces at birth but had jaundice and went down to 6 pounds, 5ounces. I am breastfeeding, so they had me supplement with formula for a week to get her weight back up. Now I am strictly breastfeeding again. At 6 weeks, she weighed 8 pounds, 5 ounces. The doctor says she's 5 ounces underweight but is otherwise healthy. He says that if she doesn't gain a pound by the time she is 8 weeks old, I have to supplement again.

I think she's fine; she's just a small baby. Should I be concerned if she's just a slight bit smaller than what they expect? I'd like to exclusively breastfeed, but should I start supplementing? Or is this doctor just being overly cautious?

I think your doctor is being overly cautious. For sure.
