Baby:
Your baby is now about the size of a golf ball. Incredibly, all of his inner and outer organs are now complete, and with that important step, the embryo phase comes to an end and the fetal phase begins! Your baby’s job now is to grow and mature until birth.
And maturing he is. Those little fingers and toes are becoming more prominent, and his arms and legs are almost in the right place — and almost proportional to the rest of the body. Elbows and wrists are now bent, and his arms are long enough to cross in front of his chest.
Around this time, the brain is dividing into large, distinct left and right hemispheres, and soon it will be able to control baby’s movements.
As the kidneys start producing urine, your baby will also start peeing in utero (don’t worry, it’s sterile, and mixes harmlessly with amniotic fluid!). Baby’s eyelids have developed enough to almost completely cover his eyes and soon will be able to shut completely. The tip of the nose can also be seen this week. The first layer of real skin starts emerging, and the skeleton gradually changes from cartilage to bone.
Mom:
You’ve probably known for at least a few weeks now that you’re pregnant, but even so, sometimes it may not quite feel really real.
What you probably have noticed, however, is that your body is preparing itself for what’s to come. It’s not unusual for your breasts to start becoming heavier and more sensitive. Try to enjoy your extra assets up top — be conscientious about lifting your head and your chest. You’ll look great and good posture will help keep your back from aching.
And while you’re at it ... you know how important it is to eat and drink things that are healthful, rather than harmful, to yourself and your baby. But it’s also important to take care of yourself mentally and emotionally; when you feel stressed, it can affect your sleep patterns and your immune system, which can lead to compromised health both for you and for baby.
You're going through some big changes. Take the time to process it all, and to relax. It can only help — both you and baby!
