Week 13

Length: 76 mm
Weight: 30 g

All measurements are approximate. Click here to see how we calculate baby's length and weight.

Baby:

Your baby is now about the size of an apricot.

Even though baby is still only a couple of inches long, he’s starting to look ever more like a mini-child. Eyes, nose and mouth are right where they’re supposed to be, and there’s a delicate layer of skin covering his body.

Vocal cords are now starting to take shape.

Baby’s liver is now producing bile, which is then stored in the gallbladder. Both the thyroid and the pancreas are complete, and the pancreas is starting to produce insulin.

It’s still hard to determine your baby’s gender by ultrasound, but visible outer sex organs are just starting to appear now.

Mom:

Congratulations, you’ve reached a milestone – the end of the first trimester!

Chances of miscarriage decrease dramatically after the end of the first trimester, as baby’s organs are virtually fully formed now (most miscarriages occur during the development process). So pat yourself on the back for having gotten through the first leg of the pregnancy marathon!

But what if you don’t feel like celebrating? Change is hard for most of us – even the kind of changes you’ve hoped or planned for.

If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed by worries, rest assured that for most pregnant women, things become less difficult from this point onward.

You can let go of the fear of “something being wrong”; chances are good that everything’s all right with the new life you are carrying inside you. So take a deep breath – or a sigh of relief.

Physically, things are probably starting to settle down and feel a bit more comfortable, too; hopefully you’re finding some relief from the nausea and exhaustion and you’re getting used to the changes in your body.

You may have already heard your baby’s heartbeat at the doctor’s office – which is sure to quiet your doubts and make you feel excited all at once!
