Week 16

Length: 120 mm
Weight: 110 g

All measurements are approximate. Click here to see how we calculate baby's length and weight.

Baby:

Your baby is now about the size of a bar of soap.

Your baby’s bones are getting harder, her muscles are getting stronger, and you’ll probably be able to feel her moving around in there sometime soon.

Her ears are clearly visible now and are just about in the right place on her head, which is more erect than it’s been up till now.

Her skin is almost transparent, and veins can clearly be seen through it. She can now swallow. From this point until birth, baby’s entire body will be covered with fine white hair called lanugo, the primary hair formed by hair follicles. This will be shed at birth and replaced by coarser hair.

Mom:

As your hormone levels gradually level out, you’ll probably be feeling significant relief from those early-pregnancy symptoms. And although your baby’s movements have become mellower and more controlled, you may already be able to feel baby moving around, especially if this is your second or third pregnancy. If it’s your first, you probably won’t feel anything for another few weeks.

You may have started noticing the appearance of the linea negra, a dark line that runs from your navel all the way down to the bottom of your belly. Strange as it may appear, this line usually disappears after giving birth. Your nipples may also be changing, as the areolas become darker and more pronounced.

The top of your uterus is now higher than your hip bones; you can actually feel it, about 3 to 4 inches below your navel. If your hand seems to automatically make its way to your belly throughout the day, it’s no surprise – there’s a good chance you’ve started showing!
