Baby:
Your baby is now about the size of a grapefruit.
The umbilical cord is growing and thickening as blood rushes through it, nourishing and strengthening your baby, whose own blood is now circulating at full speed. Her own immune system is starting to produce antibodies now, as well.
Metabolic waste called meconium is gathering in baby’s bowels. After she’s born, this will be excreted as her first bowel movements.
A waxy white substance known as vernix caseosa is now covering baby from head to toe. This protects her skin from the amniotic fluid she’s immersed in. This may slough off before birth or may still be on your baby once she’s born.
Finger prints and toe prints, unique to each individual, are appearing. By now your baby is so strong and big that you’ll almost certainly be able to feel her kick. But it still may not be a regular occurrence, so don’t panic if you don’t feel it every day.
Baby is also now sensitive to sound. You could try singing, listening to some relaxing music, or reading out loud. Baby will come to recognize and be comforted by the sound of your voice.
Mom:
How’s your husband or partner feeling about your pregnancy? Are you getting compliments about the way you look? Some pregnant women are surprised how attractive they look to their loved ones – there’s that “glow,” after all, and many find the added roundness appealing.
You, on the other hand, may be noticing your first stretch marks. As your belly and breasts expand, it sometimes causes tearing right underneath the surface of the skin. The marks may be red at first but will lighten up, and after birth they’ll become lighter still.
However you’re feeling about your own body, try to recognize your partner’s compliments for what they are – a genuine appreciation for not only how you look but the remarkable thing you are doing, creating and nurturing a new life.
Enjoy this appreciation. Spend time together, be close, and if your partner’s game, maybe ask for a gentle massage. It’s a nice way to share the experience, and who couldn’t use a massage?
