Baby:
Your baby is now about the size of a cabbage.
Your baby’s brain is now very similar to a newborn’s. He’s becoming better and better at opening and closing his eyes, and he’s a pro at sucking and swallowing.
If you’re having a boy, his testicles drop into his scrotum this week.
At this point, about 2 to 3 percent of baby’s body weight consists of fat, and his central nervous system is developed enough for the baby to regulate her/his own body temperature.
Another “phew!” moment: Your baby’s lungs are now developed enough that, if he should be born now, they could breathe in air on their own.
Mom:
You’re now in your seventh month; in some cultures, that’s cause for celebration! And for good reason: If your baby were born now, he would have greater than a 90 percent chance of survival.
Parties are great, but you should think twice about what you eat and drink – even if you’ve never experienced it before, you may now be suffering frequent attacks of heartburn. As the valve between your esophagus and your stomach gets weaker and weaker during pregnancy, some gastric juices end up flowing back upward ... ouch.
Heartburn can be amazingly painful, leaving you feeling like your throat is on fire. Luckily, there are ways to try to prevent it. Eat slowly, and only small amounts at a time; and avoid bending down right after a meal. If you can, don’t lie down for four hours after a meal, as it takes your stomach to take at least this long to empty its contents. Try to target the foods that are the worst culprits and avoid them. If it gets really bad, ask your doctor or practitioner for a recommendation of a safe over-the-counter heartburn reliever.
