Week 5

Length: 2.25 mm

All measurements are approximate. Click here to see how we calculate baby's length and weight.

Baby:
Your baby is now about the size of a grain of rice. A line, called the “primitive streak,” is forming along the length of the back plate, and the embryo takes on a more oblong shape. As these cells take on specialized functions, they move toward the vicinity of the organs they will eventually develop into.

Some of these cells converge between the two already existing layers of the embryo. The embryo now has three layers, each with its own set of tasks. The first layer will develop into the respiratory and digestive systems. The second layer will create bones, muscles, tissue, sex organs, kidneys and the circulatory system. And the third layer will make hair, skin, the brain and the spine.

Mom:
Get to know your uterus!

This amazing, pear-shaped organ, which weighs about 1.4 ounces (before pregnancy; after you’ve been pregnant, it weighs a little more), is actually a muscle. During the course of your pregnancy, it will stretch and grow till it reaches the end of your breastbone. It also increases its weight to about 2.2 pounds toward the end of pregnancy.

In this hospitable cave, a tiny cave dweller has taken up residence. Hormones are making lots of blood flow to this unique organ so that the cave dweller has the best possible conditions for growth. But that’s not the only thing the cave dweller needs to thrive, so go ahead and fill your uterus with love!
